School of Media Studies Presents A Year in Review
The School of Media Studies is proud to celebrate an extraordinary year marked by milestones, accomplishments, and cherished memories. Here’s a look back at the highlights that defined this year:
1. Hirshon Artist in Residence: Christine Vachon
Starting the year strong, the SMS community welcomed Academy Award-nominated producer Christine Vachon as the Hirshon Artist in Residence. From March 25th to March 28th, the event drew over 100 attendees, including students, faculty, and industry professionals. Vachon’s workshops and discussions offered invaluable insights into the world of filmmaking and production, setting the tone for an inspiring year ahead.
2. Student and Alumni Screenings
Throughout the year, the SMS community came together to celebrate the creative talents of our students and alumni through multiple screenings. These events showcased a variety of exceptional works, underscoring the depth and diversity of media produced by SMS filmmakers and media enthusiasts. Congratulations to all for their hard work and brilliant storytelling!
3. Honoring Charlie Warner
This year, the SMS department mourned the loss of Professor Charlie Warner, a revered member of The New School and the Media Studies faculty. His contributions to the field and the lives he touched within our community will never be forgotten.
4. 16 Years of Ruff Cuts
Ruff Cuts celebrated its 16th anniversary this year, marking yet another milestone for SMS’s main screening event. This platform continues to be a vital space for students and alumni to share their work, receive feedback, and grow as filmmakers. Cheers to another remarkable year for Ruff Cuts and to everyone involved in making this initiative a success!
5. Dynamic Media Management Panels
The year was rich with thought-provoking discussions through a series of media management panels. Events like “Gender Matters – Belonging Matters,” the NYWIFT 2024 FinanceHER Institute, and “Show and Sell Presents: Film Festivals and Beyond” addressed pivotal industry topics. Special thanks to speakers like Fernita Wynn and others who enriched such panels with their insights.
6. Congratulations to the Class of 2024
May 16 marked a proud moment as another batch of talented SMS graduates crossed the stage. The Class of 2024 continues the legacy of excellence, and we look forward to seeing the heights they’ll achieve.
7. Collaborations with NYWIFT and CenCom
Our partnerships with NYWIFT and CenCom led to multiple successful events, each attracting over 100 attendees. These collaborations expanded our community’s reach and reinforced the value of industry connections and shared knowledge.
8. New Content Series Launch
This year saw the launch of a new content series on the SMS page, spotlighting the voices of faculty and students. These thoughtful contributions provided a deeper understanding of the experiences, challenges, and inspirations within our vibrant community.
