Successful Launch of Pretty Little Brick at Weeksville Heritage Center
On Friday, December 20th, at 6:30 PM, the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn, NY, hosted a memorable celebration for the release of PRETTY LITTLE BRICK: Rituals of Rage, Safety, and Pleasure. The event featured Brittnay L. Proctor (Assistant Professor in Race and Media, SPE) and Professor Kelly Walters (Parsons), who played key roles in the creation of the book.
Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, PRETTY LITTLE BRICK is a limited edition collection of poetry, prose, plays, essays, and more, written by members of Obsidian: A Black Feminist Writers Collective. The event highlighted the book’s powerful exploration of themes such as rage, safety, and pleasure, offering a unique platform for Black feminist voices.
Professor Walters, the book’s designer, and Professor Proctor, a contributing writer, engaged with attendees and shared their insights. The event also marked the contribution of OlaRonke Akinmowo, founder of The Free Black Women’s Library, who helped foster the project through a Creative Practice Partnership with The Metropolitan Museum.
Attendees were able to purchase copies of PRETTY LITTLE BRICK, making the event both a celebration and an opportunity to engage with this important work. The launch was a success, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved and reinforcing the importance of diverse storytelling.
