Musicircus
To celebrate 100 years of The New School and the centennial of the birth of Merce Cunningham, students from the Fashion Design and Art, Media & Technology programs took part in Musicircus. This festival, first devised by John Cage in 1967, allowed amateurs and professionals to pay homage to the composer’s work by playing a selection of pieces. The event was hosted last weekend by the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin, on the outskirts of Paris. This participation follows in the wake of the partnership between CND and Parsons Paris and aims at exploring cross-disciplinary practice between contemporary dance, performance, fashion, and music. The students, along with amateur musicians, choreographers and other professionals had the opportunity to engage in the work of John Cage and Merce Cunningham. They put their theoretical research into practise using radios and newspapers to perform an iconic piece entitled Speech, composed in 1955.
