Mycelium experiments in Sustainable Systems
First Year students in the course Sustainable Systems taught by Miriam Josi discovered a fascinating material: Mycelium.

Mycelium, the vegetative part of mushrooms, can be cultivated on discarded organic matter and once dried it acts like a natural glue holding the substrate together. Lightweight, water-and fire-resistant and biodegradable, mycelium has the potential to replace existing harmful materials used in Design.

During an in class hands-on workshop students were encouraged to experiment with a variety of discarded organic substrates, such as coffee grounds, shredded paper, cardboard and natural fabric scraps to explore different possible material properties.
