Call for Participants: Camping 2022 Dance Festival

Parsons Paris Students: Join Camping 2022 from June 13 to 19!

Camping is a unique dance and performance festival bringing students together with artists from the international artistic scene. Participants spend one week at the Centre national de la Danse, in Pantin, in a sculptural brutalist building where they partake in 3 types of activities: they teach, learn, and discover.

WHAT IS CAMPING?

This festival is open to students from all over the world and in 2020, 14 schools from France, Europe and the World participated, such as the Danish national Performing Art School, Copenhagen, the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, among others.

A typical day at Camping is divided in 3 activities, all designed to expand one’s understanding of contemporary dance and performance.

In the morning, students teach creative workshops to each other, sharing their unique approach to art. The courses change every day and offer a wide array of artistic and cultural experiences to the participants.

In the afternoon, students pick a professional workshop where a renown choreographer or artist teaches their own vision of dance or performance. The list of artists includes Jean-Luc Verna, whose work has been shown at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and Galerie du Jour Agnès b. Hong Kong, American choregraphers Gerard and Kelly, whose performances were shown at Centre Pompidou and FIAC, Greek choreographer Lenio Kaklea, scheduled at Nuit Blanche and Fondation Pinault, Paris, British contemporary artist Tino Sehgal specialized in transforming the museum into an eerie space through performance, South African choreographer and stage director Robyn Orlin…

Finally, shows are scheduled in the evening. Students can discover the work of the artists they work with during the day, or other’s contemporary figures’ creations. Students benefit from special fees and it is not uncommon to meet the dancers or choreographers after the show.

Camping is organized by the CN D (Centre national de la Danse), a French institution dedicated to 3 main missions: preserving dance as a living repertory through producing new and past choreographic pieces, promoting artistic and cultural education for all, and training professionals through masterclasses and workshops. In addition to rehearsal studios and a large auditorium, the CN D hosts a media library offering a wide range of multilingual resources and collections devoted to the choreography and dance techniques open to the participants during the festival.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Everyone! No dance prerequisite is necessary for this immersive summer camp that makes all the poetic experiences of dance and other art practices possible.

In 2020, four students from Parsons Paris participated in the festival. What drove them to participate was their curiosity, their desire to meet new young creatives like as well as recognized artists to increase their professional connections and horizons.

Parsons Paris students taught workshops connected to their personal interests such as body painting and abstract expressionism or poetic graphic design. All topics are welcomed, even the ones that are not directly related to dance or performance.
