MA Fashion Studies Symposium 2022

Fashion, Heritage and Media

The 2022 edition of the Fashion Studies Symposium will revolve around the thematic of fashion heritage mediation.

Fashion heritage is increasingly attracting the attention of players outside the sphere of academia. This can be observed in the communication strategies employed by luxury fashion houses as well as the growing resources invested in their archival departments. In popular culture, the value of fashion heritage for the creative industries and museum institutions has been renewed through digital formats offered by social media. We have seen documentaries reflecting on the heritage of fashion houses; YouTube playlists dedicated to the display of fashion archives and collections; museum institutions and fashion brands creating social media content that showcases heritage management practices; but also a disruption of traditional ideas of heritage and an attempt to explore the pitfalls of fashion archives. The questions we aim to address through this symposium concern the perspectives of fashion archives’ activation through media channels and the consequent redefinition of heritage. As heritage and archives increasingly cover the marketing needs of fashion houses, what are the discourses that may be built by the digital commodification of heritage? How do public media and fashion journalism position themselves in the digital expression of fashion heritage? How has the idea of heritage being disrupted? The forthcoming conference will be an opportunity to address some of these questions.

Keynote speakers Professor Judith Clark and critic Stephanie Sporn will guide the conversation and present their previous and current work in the field of fashion heritage mediation:

The work of Judith Clark has been instrumental in shaping a critical view on these matters. By sharing her experience with the participants, she will look at the ways the idea of heritage was approached in relation to brands but also in connection with the meaning of fashion at large. Some of her previous experiences include collaborations with Chloe, Lanvin, Balenciaga, the expo ‘The Judgment of Paris’ and Homo Faber.

Stephanie Sporn, as a fashion journalist with a background in costume studies and dress history, will provide interesting conversation points around the topic of heritage communication. Sporn will introduce us to those contexts in which art’s and fashion’s display share a common space, as in her work for Christie’s. Some of her past experiences concern curatorial-themed interventions on the 21st century museums.

The participants will be also able to share their interventions on the topic through different types of formats. If you would like to present your work on fashion heritage mediation please send an email to <symposiumcommittee.parsonsparis@gmail.com>.

The Symposium will take place both physically on April 29th, at Parsons Paris (45 rue Saint Roch, Paris 75001) and online (Zoom).
