MA Fashion Studies + International Library of Fashion Research digital exhibition

A micro-curated digital exhibition is being shown on the International Library of Fashion Research website, presenting the results of last semester’s workshop, Research and Content Creation in Contemporary Fashion. During this course, led by Elise Olsen, students were asked to rework and decontextualize an object from the library’s archive into a randomly picked format to question the limitations and reach of the different communication outlets implemented by the fashion system.

Seven new formats are featured along with the original one selected by the students.

Loewe’s Spring Summer 2018 Womenswear publication transformed into a Newsletter by Chih Lin Cheng: “The newsletter set consists of a bouquet, a small wooden box with Polaroid photos  and a third box with the description of the collection, a printed napkin with the squirrel featured in the original magazine, a QR code, and a traditional Japanese dessert.”

Dutch Magazine Issue 14 from 1998 transformed into digital advertising by Isabella Volpe. “A series of short videos were created using the iPhone’s ‘scan document’ option to present a meta-video showcasing the user’s operation to collect and digitalize material content.”

Philippe Starck with Virgin Conscience CD from 1998 into a Christmas Card by Michelle Van Eyssen: “As Balenciaga is associated with construction and sculptural forms, the contents of the Christmas card include all the necessary elements to ‘build’ your own Christmas stocking.”

Waist Down: Skirts By Miuccia Prada, a traveling exhibition press release, was transformed into a box by Emmaline Jeansonne: “The format of an advent calendar allowed me to use the same structure and material of a ‘box’ to create something equally distributable, recyclable, and specific to the original archival item.”

Hermès Manifesto For The Right Of The Tie To Arrange Its Own Affairs was turned into an Instagram post by Deema Almashabi: “I aimed to blend Hermès’ unique artistic digital presence with the manifesto’s timeless elegance.”

M/M’s dossier for the Givenchy Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 2009/10 fashion show was recontextualized into a YouTube video by Gaurav Dey: “The YouTube video aims to communicate the collection in an immersive format that would merge sound, text, and historical enrichment.”

Visionaire 42 ‘Scent’ converted into an essay by Christ Turner: “The essay provides a thorough elucidation of the sensory evocations of selected spreads, utilizing one expressive medium  largely untapped in the original ‘Scent’ issue: written language.”
