Typographic Cast: Art, Media and Technology Sophomore Exhibition

For the first module of their Core Studio “Narratives”, Sophomore students were taught the basics of graphic design, each creating several printed pieces to be displayed at the exhibition at the end of the 5 week module. Art, Media and Technology sophomore Jonathan Riese shares his experience.

The module started out with each of us picking a typeface we were interested in and researching its history and personality. We then went on to to identify a character from a movie or book who was in some way similar to the typeface, and to choose a text by or about this character. Once we had made our selections, our Core Studio and Lab instructors, Arnaud and Sophie, helped us turn our text into a 16-page design, to show the unique personality of our character through the appropriate use of typeface.  Finally, technical pages were added, showing the typeface and its history in more detail. Then, the entire project was produced as a printed book, the centerpiece of the final exhibition. The exhibition was held at the Parsons Paris Gallery, decorated with posters designed for the occasion and postcards that visitors could take with them. Students from all years and majors visited the exhibition, and we were proud to show all the work we could produce in such a short time!
