Student Internship Spotlight: Molly Apple at Tagwalk
Where is your internship? Who is it for? What is the company known for?
My internship is at Tagwalk, which is a fashion tech start up coined the google of fashion. The company is known for creating a transformative platform for the fashion industry by cataloging looks by using more than 2,800 key words, users can search by brand, season, city, trend, color, fabric or style through thousands of pictures.
What are your roles within the position?
My role as a fashion intern is to tag the looks from each show that brands and our photographers send with their keywords so the search engine can run.
How long is your internship? What are you hoping to learn during this time?
My internship is 6 months, and I am using it for course credit to supplement the research for my MA Fashion Studies thesis topic which will explore fashion tech and how artificial intelligence supplements creativity. I am hoping to learn more about how Tagwalk collaborates with different brands and also how they utilize artificial intelligence for the future of fashion technology.
What is the coolest/ most intriguing part of your internship?
The most intriguing part of my internship is being a part of something that is revolutionizing how the fashion uses technology to expand and improve it’s practices. It’s an awesome and passionate team of young and educated employees and great environment to work in.
How did you find and secure the internship? What was the process? What was ideal within your resume for the position?
I met representatives of Tagwalk at the Parsons career fair, and secured the internship after a few interviews and meetings with the fashion director and owner of the company herself – Alexandra Van Houtte. My resume is very multi-faceted as I have a textile design background and now am getting my masters in Fashion Studies, they appreciated by combined academic knowledge with creativity. I have knowledge about the specificity of garments to tag their keywords and I also have adobe skills to contribute gifs and other imagery for their instagram. What was ideal within your resume for the position?
What advice would you give to others looking for an internship at this company or in this industry?
My advice is to follow up and be personable. Companies get hundreds of internship inquiry emails so make sure to include what sets you apart and what unique skill sets you can bring to the table.
