An Interview with Michelle Materre
Our very own Michelle Materre was recently interviewed for a feature on The New School Collaboratory blog. Michelle Materre is the Director of the BPATS program and an Associate Professor of Media Studies and Film. She is also the programmer, curator, and producer of the Creatively Speaking Film Series.
In this interview, Professor Materre discusses her early teaching work and how she “realized how much media plays a role in education and how engaged young people could be by the media”. This realization led her to accomplish many things in film and media, including her work with “Creatively Speaking” an outlet for filmmakers of color and women filmmakers who have yet to reach the possibility of making feature-length films.
Ms. Materre also discusses her socially-engaged pedagogy, saying, “The things that are of most interest to me happen to be socially-engaged, social justice issues. The things that are most relevant to our students are these same kinds of issues.” You can read the full interview here.
