The graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education programs of the School of Media Studies combine theory, research, production, and management studies, preparing students to succeed in a complex and rapidly changing media and communications landscape. Degrees and Programs

Media Studies MA

The master’s program in Media Studies offers a flexible and interdisciplinary curriculum in media theory and practice with an emphasis on the production of a film, video, audio, and emerging media. Gain experience in creative media making, critical analysis and reflection, and entrepreneurship and management – guided by a faculty that includes noted film and media-makers, researchers, designers, and scholars. The master’s program in Media Management offers you the advanced tools, practical experience, and professional network you need to succeed as a leader in today’s rapidly evolving media industries. Whether you want to advance your media career or launch a new enterprise, our faculty of industry experts provide a solid foundation in the latest practices and concepts for managing traditional and emergent media organizations and platforms. Documentary Media Studies Certificate

Immerse yourself in documentary filmmaking — production and theory — in New York City, the world’s documentary capital. The Graduate Certificate in Documentary Media Studies is an intensive professional education program for prospective documentarians. In the course of one year, you develop, shoot, direct, and edit an original short documentary film on a New York City-related subject. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and submit a portfolio; previous study of filmmaking is not required. Learn more.

Media Management Certificate

The Graduate Certificate in Media Management provides a strong foundation of management principles and leadership skills for business professionals working or expecting to find work in the ever-changing global media landscape. The curriculum includes courses in industry perspectives, management and leadership, media economics, information technologies, competitive strategies, and corporate responsibility, and specialized classes in the businesses of film, music, and social media. Media Studies BA/MA

Earn a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies in a program open to transfer students, adults, and other nontraditional undergraduates. The Media Studies major helps you gain conceptual, technical, and practical skills in media analysis, production, and management. Learn to think critically about the creation, distribution, and reception of historic and emergent media forms in a global context. The program is designed to prepare students for professional work in a range of media fields such as film, web, mobile, print, games, social media, marketing, and transmedia narrative. Learn more.

The School of Media Studies faculty is a distinguished and diverse group of globally recognized award-winning filmmakers, critics, curators, scholars, and artists. Many of our professors are active professionals in their fields who bring the latest creative and technological innovations into the classroom. One of the most exciting aspects of studying at the School of Media Studies is the opportunity to engage with and learn from some of the greatest film and media makers of our time in the Hirshon Artist-In-Residence program.
