Meet Our New Global Dialogues 2019 Fellows!
Selbi Durdiyeva is a Ph.D. student at the Transitional Justice Institute, Ulster University, Northern Ireland. Her research looks at the role of civil society in transitional justice processes in Russia, focusing on the repressions of the Soviet era. She holds an LLM in International Human Rights Law and Law of Armed Conflict from the University of Essex, UK and LLM in International Law (with a focus on investment arbitration) from KIMEP University, Kazakhstan. Her interests are transitional justice, human rights, humanitarian law, and Democratisation.
Vita Zelenska is an independent researcher, anthropologist, curator. Graduated from the European University at Saint-Petersburg, majoring in cultural anthropology (MA).
Vita’s main interests lie in the fields of musical anthropology, sound studies, and human geography. She has also curated the educational program on sound and society called “Vslukh” (October 2018) and worked as a researcher and curator at the exhibition “Revision. Places and Communities” (September 2018) at the New Holland Island cultural center, Russia.
Ihor Andriichuk is an independent scholar, MA in philosophy, graduated from the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (Kyiv, Ukraine) in 2015. Ihor was a participant of the 26th Democracy & Diversity Institute in Wrocław in 2017. His research project at the Global Dialogues Fellowship Program aims at examining the policy of decommunization in Ukraine with regard to two opposing narratives of evil developed by Hannah Arendt and Nikita Khrushchev.
Irina Shirobokova is a researcher at the Center for Independent Social Research, Russia. She works in the fields of sociology and political geography studying urban public space in Russia and European countries. Currently, she has been working on two projects: Estates after the transition, a study of post-socialist urban governance (tog. with Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space, University of Tartu), The layered cake of neighborliness, a study of shared living spaces and cooperative housing (tog. with KONE Foundation, CISR, the University of Eastern Finland).
Julián Gómez-Delgado is a Ph.D. student in Sociology and Historical Studies at The New School for Social Research. He holds an M.A in Social Science with a specialization in Sociology from El Colegio de México. His research in political and historical sociology focuses on state formation and social conflict across Latin America. Currently, he is studying the agrarian reform in Colombia during the 1960s in relation to the emergence of this country’s civil conflict.
Ahad Ali is a Ph.D. Student at the Department of Sociology, NSSR, The New School. His project for the TCDS Fellowship is a comparative study of online communities across the political spectrum disseminating, amplifying and producing their own political news and discourse. His academic interests include the Public Sphere, Research Methods, Sociology of Knowledge, Science and Technology Studies, and Media Studies.
Theo Vasconcelos de Almeida is an MA student at the Department of Politics, NSSR. Theo is interested in political theory and the history of the Brazilian political crisis. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. His is interested in the reasons that influenced the victory of the extreme right in the 2018 elections. He intends to critically discuss the electoral process, the “Car Wash” investigation, Rousseff’s impeachment, Lula’s imprisonment, and Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign.
Kirti Varma is a Ph.D. student, Department of Sociology, NSSR. Her academic interests lie at the intersection of state, identity, and education. She hopes to explore social and state imaginations’ of education and the underlying assumptions that form the foundation of educational policies, specifically, of those in India. As a Global Dialogues Fellow, she will look at democratic institutions in India that are being stripped of their autonomy by the ruling party that is both right-wing and nationalistic.
