Free Speech in an Age of Trumpery: Lecture by Timothy Garton Ash at The New School
Join us at the New School for a lecture by the noted historian Timothy Garton Ash on Free Speech in an Age of Trumpery as part of the Hans Maeder Lecture Series!
Populism in both the United States and Europe relies heavily on establishing a narrative through mass and social media. Often, as in Britain’s Brexit debate or the current US presidential election, commentators suggest that we seem to be living in a post-fact society.
Drawing on his new book Free Speech: Ten Principles For a Connected World (Yale University Press), Timothy Garton Ash reflects on the new challenges to free speech that have arisen even in countries where people enjoy constitutionally guaranteed freedom of expression. The free speech we need for democracy, he argues, requires more than just the negative liberty of freedom from prior constraint by the state.
